Bad writing

I have been wondering what makes for bad writing. Of course, everyone writes the best they can, and deserve neither blame or criticism, but is there such a thing as bad writing? And what are its components? Maybe bad is not the right word, as it is so emotive. What makes some writing "better" than others?

Welcome, Gale, to our Work in Progress blog! I am pleased WIP is at last conscious after a worrying period of apparent coma. Now let's see some more contributors!
Regarding your question, I wonder whether we strive in our efforts to avoid the classification of "bad" to make our work not merely correct in structure and spelling, which is the skillful use of tools, but to have a life of its own, with character and individuality, expressive and somewhat beyond the mediocre. To me "good" writing, by which I mean writing that satisfies me, about which I feel I have produced my best, is much more than rhyme and rhythm, and the convention of form.
